ABSTRACT

Fundamental nutritional imbalances in humans reside squarely in diet and food. However, food, which constitutes diet, is not the same as food 70 years ago, because of its depletion in nutrient density. Food nutrient quality is directly and intimately correlated to the nutrient quality of the soil environment upon or in which that food is grown. True human health begins with soil fertility and food nutrition. The fundamental premise of this brief chapter is to present a human perspective on recognizing the link between human health and soil fertility. The beginning of an appropriate nutritional balancing program starts with laying the foundation. Too often, calcium is addressed in soil fertility, not as a nutrient, but rather as a liming material. Calcium is the key ubiquitous signaling entity in living plants. The N-P-K model of fertilization used today and in the past has created environmental, economic, and public health calamities that will be felt for generations.
