ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with regularities that can be observed in statistical distributions of sensitivity toward chemical exposure over different species (species sensitivity distribution, SSD). These distributions can only be derived if the toxicity of a chemical is tested with a wide variety of species. To identify possible sources of the required toxicity data, it is essential to linger on the historical development of toxicity testing.
