ABSTRACT
Friction technology comprises the application of scienti c concepts, engineering practice, and experience to the improvement of devices whose proper function depends in some manner on frictional contact. This multidisciplined eld is too extensive to be covered in a single book, much less in a single chapter; however, the following sections illustrate by example how friction technology has improved energy ef - ciency, safety, and the quality of life.
