ABSTRACT

All lubricating greases contain lubricating oil with various additives that carry most of the tribological responsibility, and a solid thickening agent used to immobilize the ¨uid. Typical additives in grease are antioxidants used to improve thermal and oxidative stability, rust inhibitors to mitigate corrosion, and antiwear agents selected to ameliorate surface damage when loads, temperature, and speed induce asperity contact. Commonly employed grease thickeners are shown in Table 28.1.
