Figure 48.1 shows a typical design procedure for an engineering machine element with a nonconforming contact or contacts. Details vary with the exact type of component. Initial design is usually on the basis of strength: sizing so as to limit the stresses, for example, the Hertz stress or maximum contact pressure to less than a permitted value.
