ABSTRACT
Handbook of Surface and Nanometrology (Whitehouse 2011) is recommended to readers wishing more detail on this subject. In his weighty tome, David Whitehouse does an excellent job of reviewing the state of the art in surface metrology, including surface roughness and its relation to friction. Here, in this chapter, emphasis is placed concept of scale as the key underlying concept in surface metrology.
