ABSTRACT
Anesthesia can be defi ned as the lack of response or recall to noxious stimuli. The word is derived from Greek and means “without feeling”; it was fi rst used by the Greek philosopher Dioscorides in the fi rst century AD to describe the narcotic effect of the plant Mandragora.
