ABSTRACT
Opioid tolerance, dependence, and hyperalgesia are adaptations to continued
opioid use. Much is now understood about their underlying mechanisms, and
there are chapters in this book outlining these mechanisms in considerable detail.
This chapter is not about mechanisms, but about the interplay between opioid
tolerance, dependence, and hyperalgesia, and how understanding this interplay
can inform clinical practice.
