ABSTRACT
Sanitary landfills or refuse dumps can, however, because of their size and the variety of materials present, support the widest variety of living organisms at a nutritional level likely to be competitive with other sources of food for these organisms. Access to food wastes at dumps or landfills can reduce energy expenditures for animals or birds that might otherwise forage elsewhere over wide areas to obtain a similar daily food intake.
