ABSTRACT

One of the more important scientific studies on the genetically modified food issue — at least politically important — was conducted by the National Academy of Sciences. The study is, of course, too long to reproduce here, and almost surely too technical for all but other scientists to understand and evaluate. But the press release summarizing its findings and the opening statement at the news conference announcing its release are reprinted here. These documents are, in most ways, more significant than the study itself, for they are what was reported in the press and, hence, what the public was led to understand as the definitive scientific truth.
