ABSTRACT

The most interesting and compelling arguments for limited regulation with respect to bioengineered food, as with other issues, have been made by these foundations and think tanks. I have therefore included two of the most provocative and challenging. One is an extended interview conducted by Ronald Bailey with Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Norman Borlaug in

Reason

. The other is a rebuttal to those who would require labeling of such foods in Consumer Alert

. The New York Times

op-ed by Daniel J. Popeo, from the Washington Legal Foundation, is an effort to reacher a broader audience than the others. Another such argument, in Cato’s journal,

Regulation,

is reproduced in the Media section of this Casebook. Biotech companies do, of course, advance their interests on their Web sites, but,

again, they frequently refer and link to others to make their case. But Monsanto has established — and prominently displays — its new pledge, which I have provided here.
