ABSTRACT
Increases in atmospheric CO2 measured over the last few decades are likely to continue and lead to significant global climate changes during the coming decades. To predict with any confidence these climatic and ecological consequences, we must identify globally significant sources and sinks of carbon (C) and define the relationships between them (Tans et al., 1990; Canadell et al., 1996a).
