ABSTRACT

Pollution prevention, also referred to as “source reduction” means the deliberatedecrease in the amount of any hazardous substance, contaminant, or pollutant thatenters the environment prior to recycling, treatment, or disposal. As such, pollution prevention strategies have as their primary goal a series of employable tactics that serve to reduce or eliminate entirely the generation of pollutants and waste from the source of generation. The role that source reduction plays in the 21st century is one of ecological consequence. In addition to protecting natural and finite resources such as water and oil, pollution prevention tactics also improve the manner in which virgin resources are used. Because pollution prevention methodologies stress resource and material conservation, raw material losses and the need for expensive end-of-the-pipe technologies are greatly reduced. Source reduction therefore appears to be one of the most cost-effective strategies in fighting the war against pollution.
