ABSTRACT

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the most frequently acquired neurological disorder in people under the age of ¨±y. še vast majority are closed head injuries (CHI) caused by a blunt impact not penetrating the skull. Typically the injury is caused by a tra¬c crash or a fall that very suddenly decelerates the head. še impact causes the brain to move violently within the skull, resulting in contusion and laceration of brain tissue, particularly di¥use axonal injuries in the white matter and focal contusions in the frontal and temporal areas. Further damage to the brain can result from complications during recovery (e.g., Long & Ross, 1992; Richardson, 2001).
