ABSTRACT

Now that we have reviewed a competency model for the proactive management of volunteers, we will turn to one vital aspect of management: building resilience in your volunteers to handle the stress of disaster volunteering. Incorporating this as an essential part of your spontaneous-volunteer management program will help to address the challenge of the lack of staff and afliated volunteers, because resilient spontaneous volunteers may well become afliated or long-term volunteers that signicantly increase your ability to respond to disaster. This proactive approach also helps to minimize the risk of utilizing spontaneous volunteers and reduces liability by creating an environment in which volunteers feel supported and in turn can continue to support disaster survivors and your agency.
