This chapter addresses those protection issues that arise specifically in the context of diagnostic and interventional radiology. The protection of both the patient and occupationally exposed individuals is addressed in some detail, and the protection of members of the public in general is considered in the context of site shielding. In order to fully appreciate how protection may best be optimized, a few introductory comments will be made about the production of x-rays.
