ABSTRACT
Th e scope of this chapter (corrosion protective smart materials) includes a critical discussion of recent advances where environmentally responsive materials have been considered and engineered for smart corrosion protection. We will consider only corrosion protective coatings and exclude self-lubricating, optical, nontumescent, nonskid, and tamper-resistant coatings, important topics of their own but beyond the scope of this review. Although related to corrosion protective coatings, corrosion indicating coatings such as those described by Zhang and Frankel [4] also will not be covered in great detail in this chapter.
