ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION The development of a pharmaceutical products containing new active substance or a product that is a major line extension is a complex task involving a wide range of disciplines. It may take between 10 and 15 years to develop a new active substance and cost in excess of US $1 billion (1). Many functions have an important role in the successful development of a product but arguably the demonstration of efficacy and safety lies at the very center of drug development.
