Use of biomarkers in drug development Biomarkers serve as hallmarks for the status of tumor growth at a given time, and change during the disease process. Their use for the detection of progressive disease or the definition of subpopulations of patients is not new:
■ Increase in prostate-specific antigen (PSA) during or after therapy points to disease progression in prostate cancer.
