ABSTRACT

Waterproof breathable fabrics balance two contradicting properties: They are waterproof and yet water vapor permeable. Apparel made from these fabrics protect the wearer from rain, snow, sleet, and chilly wind, and at the same time allow perspiration (water vapor) to breathe out of the clothing. Compact coated fabrics are waterproof but uncomfortable to wear. Water-repellent-treated fabrics are comfortable to wear but cannot prevent the penetration of water for a long time. These fabrics are used for protection in extremely cold weather and for health-care garments.
