ABSTRACT
It is probably fair to say that the development and wide commercial availability of the confocal microscope have been one of the most signicant advances in light microscopy in the recent past. e main reason for the popularity of these instruments derives from their ability to permit the structure of thick specimens of biological tissue to be investigated in three dimensions by resorting to a scanning approach together with a novel (confocal) optical system.
