Recent advances in optical diagnostic and imaging technologies have enabled researchers to initiate hypothesis-driven studies on brain function. A primary emphasis has been on cerebral hemodynamics: passive monitoring, response to functional activation, and delineating healthy from diseased cerebral tissue.
