About 40 years ago, a number of papers described abnormal activities of what was then called plasma (serum) amine oxidase in patients with various diseases (Nilsson et al., 1968; Tryding et al., 1969; McEwen and Cohen, 1963; McEwen and Castell, 1967). This plasma amine oxidase is now generally referred to as semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase (SSAO). SSAO is also known as vascular adhesion protein-1 (VAP-1) since the discovery that VAP-1 and SSAO are the same; the two names simply reect the different functional aspects of the same protein (Smith et al., 1998).
