ABSTRACT

As benets of GLA for human health have now been well established, the general public has searched for GLA-rich oils for the purpose of supplementation or as a food ingredient. At present, the natural sources of GLA are plant seed oils from evening primrose, borage, and black currant. GLA can also be found in fungal oils from Mucor spp. and Mortierella spp. However, many of these sources are not economically well suited for use in human nutrition. The current GLA-rich oils (borage oil and evening primrose oil) in the market are still expensive and unreliable due to great variations in availability and high cost of processing. Thus, there is an increasing effort to engineer the fatty acid biosynthesis of oil seed crops to produce GLA at low cost.
