We consider in this chapter the first order in time velocity-stress formulation of elastodynamics. In comparison with the second order formulation that we studied in the previous chapter, the first order system has the following two advantages: (i) it can be naturally coupled with the fictitious domain method for taking into account the free surface boundary condition on the stress tensor, (ii) as for any first order hyperbolic problem it is possible for this formulation to derive a perfectly matched absorbing layer model which permits modelling elastic wave propagation in infinite domains.
