ABSTRACT

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) was established in 1966 and became a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) in 1985. It promotes the creation of wealth and the alleviation of poverty through manufacturing industry. The Organization focuses on three interrelated thematic priorities:

• Poverty Reduction through Productive Activities: UNIDO seeks to enable the poor to earn a living through productive activities and thus žnd a way out of poverty. The Organization provides a comprehensive range of services customized for developing countries and transition economies, ranging from advice on industrial policy to entrepreneurship and the development of small and medium enterprises (SME), and from technology diffusion to sustainable production and the provision of rural energy for productive uses.
