ABSTRACT

It is important to discuss software when we describe radio frequency identiŽcation (RFID) and operations such as warehousing. Since the mid-1990s, warehousing and other operations have become computerized. To realize any beneŽt from technologies such as RFID, operations must be computerized. In this section, we describe the different types of systems that allow for efŽcient operations. Because software and middleware are the most important pieces of an RFID solution, these packages are needed to make use of information collected by RFID technology with all the other systems operating in the warehouse: warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), event management systems, order management systems (OMS), and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
