ABSTRACT

Both the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have established different classes for commonly used logistical items. These include:

DOD and NATO use the same classes for Classes I-V. All 10 classes include

• Class I: Food • Class II: Clothing • Class III: Fuel and lubricants • Class IV: Barrier or fortiŽcation materials • Class V: Ammunition • Class VI: Personal demand items • Class VII: Major end items • Class VIII: Medical supplies • Class IX: Repair parts • Class X: Material for nonmilitary programs

Items are further individually identiŽed by a national stock number (NSN) for the United States and NATO countries. NSNs are a total 13 alphanumeric character designations organized in three subgroups in the following form.
