ABSTRACT

In Chapter 1, the notion of diffusional processes was introduced in which mass transfer takes place by molecular motion only and is proportional to the concentration gradient of the diffusing species. This proportionality is enshrined in Fick’s law of diffusion, and this introductory chapter was used to acquaint the reader with some simple applications of that law (see Illustrations 1.4 and 1.5). In this chapter and the one that follows, the intent is to amplify and expand the material on diffusion that was presented in Chapter 1.
