ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how the principles of kinetic modelling described in detail in chapters 4 and 6 can be applied to collect all the available information on energy metabolism of whole organelles, such as mitochondria, to construct a kinetic model and predict the response of the organelle to changes in external conditions. We present here a kinetic model describing the operation of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria respiring on succinate. In the framework of the model we have simulated not only biochemical reactions but reactions coupled to production and consumption of electric potential difference as well as transport processes.
