ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION In both humans and other animals, the nose is an important sensory organ, containing receptors capable of detecting a wide variety of airborne chemicals through the perception of odor. Among humans, impairment of our olfactory function can have serious consequences for the detection of many volatile warning signals (e.g., smoke, spoiled food, and gas leaks) and can impact food choice, nutritional status, social relationships, and many other issues related to quality of life.
