ABSTRACT

This chapter will explain what a Kanban system is, how it works, and how it can be implemented. The theory will then be applied to a Lean manufacturing cell to illustrate the implementation. This chapter also presents the modeling of a Kanban manufacturing and production system through the use of simulation. A model is constructed for a discrete, noncontinuous simulation of a multistage, dual-card Kanban production system. The performance of the model is monitored by tracking work in process (WIP), orders completed, and the production throughput in the just-in-time (JIT)/Kanban production environment.
