ABSTRACT

In recent decades, efforts to better understand the occurrence, fate, and environmental effects of anthropogenic chemicals have focused largely on industrial compounds and agricultural pesticides. This emphasis has been in response to the increasing production of these chemicals, including the so-called emerging contaminants, such as pharmaceutical active ingredients and personal care products, their concentrated use, the potential risk of persistence, and their sometimes unknown acute and chronic toxic effects (see Table 8.1 for the most important groups of emerging pollutants).1
