Chapter Solid-State Electrochemistry

The world’s energy production based on the combustion of fossil fuels is having a serious impact on the ecology worldwide, besides causing economic and political problems [1-4]. Therefore, the electrochemical generation of energy is a viable alternative option, given that this approach is more sustainable and environmentally friendly than fossil fuel combustion [5-8]. In this chapter, a brief review of solid-state electrochemistry emphasizing on solid oxide fuel cells and, to a certain extent, polymer electrolyte fuel cells, is given.
