ABSTRACT

In recent years, it has become necessary for designers and users of turbomachinery to understand and predict the acoustic as well as aerodynamic performance of turbomachines. A great deal has been written on the subject of acoustics, including acoustics in turbomachinery. This chapter introduces some general concepts and then examines sound production and noise prediction in turbomachines. This chapter focuses on the acoustics of fans and blowers, with the understanding that the acoustic phenomena in other types of turbomachines behave in a similar fashion. Interested readers are encouraged to consult the extensive reference list of recommended books and papers on acoustics in turbomachinery given at the end of this book.
