ABSTRACT

I. INTRODUCTION The male striated urethral sphincter (external sphincter) is just one component in a mélange of intricate musculature that composes the pelvic floor and receives innervation primarily from sacral nerve roots. Accurate medical illustration of this part of the human male has always been problematic. Among the numerous offerings available in the literature to understand the complexity of this region, Hinman’s Atlas of Urosurgical Anatomy (1) is particularly forthcoming in clarifying how pelvic floor structures, including the external sphincter, grossly relate to one another.
