ABSTRACT

I. Introduction Pneumothorax is defined as air in the pleural space. Traumatic pneumothoraces can occur following both blunt and penetrating injuries to the chest, although the most common traumatic pneumothorax occurs following iatrogenic needle puncture of the lung. Spontaneous pneumothoraces are divided into primary and secondary subtypes. Primary spontaneous pneumothorax occurs in the absence of underlying lung disease, while secondary spontaneous pneumothorax occurs with increased frequency compared to the general population associated with most lung diseases.
