ABSTRACT

Albert Einstein is universally known for the relativity theory he elaborated and developed between 1905. In October 1895, Einstein, as a result of lacking the standard schoolleaving certificate, was refused entry by the Polytechnic and was not even allowed through the entrance examination stage, notwithstanding his excellence in mathematics and physics. Einstein remained in his post in Bern until the end of 1909, when he received his first full time academic position as an associate professor at Zurich University. At this time his scientific merits were already largely recognized. Sometime after December 1907 Einstein started his academic career. On 6 July 1909, Einstein submitted his resignation to the Patent Office and moved to the University. Professor Einstein appeared in class in casual dress, often wearing trousers which were too short and bearing a small piece of paper the size of a visiting card on which he had written his lecture notes.
