ABSTRACT

Two words fl ow through this chapter: torque and rpm. The driving cycle establishes the required torque and rpm; however, the values are those at the wheels. Of the two variables, rpm is special because of the engine and fuel consumption. For a band of rpm values along a line in the engine map, fuel consumption is a minimum. One frequent goal of hybrid control is to operate on the correct line in the map. The “minimum fuel consumption line,” also known as the “basic operating line” is discussed.
