ABSTRACT
HEVs are gasoline/electric or diesel/electric and burn hydrocarbons. The fuel cell/battery and fuel cell/ultracapacitor hybrids typically use hydrogen.
Whether or not HEVs or FCVs are on the fringe or mainstream depends on many factors, which form the contents of this chapter. Oil peaking is extremely important, as is discussed in Chapter 2. Oil supply and demand affects oil prices and availability. The status of the global economy affects demand as well as world population. Alternate fuels need to fi ll the gap between supply and demand that will occur after peaking.
