ABSTRACT

Carbon composite research has made great strides in the last 40 years due to international collaboration. Modern carbon fiber history began in the 1960s with the work of A. Shindo of the Industrial Research Institute of Osaka, Japan. Western scientists began using carbon fibers as a reinforcement later that decade, and the first commercial-grade fiber was produced in England in 1967 [1]. Traditional carbon composites used today consist of tows of micrometer carbon fibers incorporated into various resin matrices.
