ABSTRACT

China has a long tradition of using medicinal foods to prevent and treat a whole range of maladies ranging from mild colds and ues to more severe af ictions such as liver or dermatological diseases. Since ancient times, the Chinese people have understood the interrelationship between human beings and their environment, as well as the repercussions of living out of harmony with nature. They believe that if humans obey the laws of nature, they will bene t by maintaining an optimal state of health, prevent disease, and most importantly extend their life span. This understanding of interrelationship is not limited to seasonal changes and their surrounding environment, but can also be extended to exercise, sexual practice, and dietetics (Harper, 1998).
