The environment of the cathode in electrolysis has long been known to be highly basic; indeed, the electrolysisofbrineisthemajorroutefortheproductionofsodiumhydroxide.However,itwasnot until1966thatpossibilitiesforthedeliberatecathodicgenerationofbases,forasyntheticpurpose, began to be explored.
