ABSTRACT
Severe hyperglycemia is associated with several neurological complications.
These may arise in the setting of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a feature of type 1
diabetes or nonketotic hyperosmolar syndrome usually seen in older patients. An
acute painful sensory polyneuropathy specifically linked to severe hyperglyce-
mia is also described.
