Novel materials and formulations enable the site-speci…c targeting and controlled release of traditional pharmaceuticals, recombinant proteins, vaccines, and nucleic acids (Goldberg et al. 2007); safeguard drugs from spoilage as caused by attacks of enzymes, and enhance the penetration of the active agent in the diseased tissues improving its bioavailability, with increase in ef…cacy and toxicity reduction (Veronese and Caliceti 2002).
