ABSTRACT
This chapter describes the background of randomised controlled clinical trials and the main factors that should be considered in their design. The description of the issues associated with clinical trial design is made in the context of assessing innovative therapies. The different types of clinical trials, for different objectives, are then described in detail. It is highlighted how these different objectives have an impact on study design with respect to derivation of formulae for sample size calculations.
