ABSTRACT

This is the first of several chapters dealing with the applications of randomization tests. These chapters serve a dual function: The primary function is to illustrate randomization test principles by specific instances. A second function is to pr ovide applications useful to experimenters. Early randomization test programs and packages pr oduced in the 1960s and 1970s wer e BASIC or FORTRAN programs. Programs are readily available from commercial and private sour ces in modern computer languages and ar e more efficient, but a discussion of the early pr ograms will help in understanding modern programs and the randomization test rationale underlying them. The programs on the CD accompanying this book therefore are in FORTRAN. The randomization test procedure is best understood if it is first consider ed in relation to familiar statistical tests. Ther efore, the early chapters concern applications to common analysis of variance (ANOVA) and

t

tests, providing the foundation for later applications to more complex and less familiar tests.
