ABSTRACT
Almost 75 years ago, two research groups in Russia and India simultaneously and independently observed an important nonlinear optical process-Raman scattering. Since then the field of nonlinear optics has increased in importance and provided us with a significant amount of information about fundamental light-matter interactions and enabled the development of sophisticated new types of optical devices including optical parametric amplifiers and Raman lasers.
