ABSTRACT

At present, considerable uncertainty exists regarding risks from nanoscale materials and the products that incorporate them. This chapter gives an introduction to some of the current science and its implications regarding the effects of nanomaterials on human health. Although numerous studies have been completed, they are not reviewed comprehensively here; rather, this chapter gives an overview, focusing on carbon nanotubes as an example of a category of nanomaterials, the types of heath effects observed, and the complexities of toxicological studies with nanoscale materials.
