ABSTRACT

As we have experienced with the recent epidemic of the virulent coronavirus (SARS), new pathogens will continue to challenge us. New pathogens that infect the nervous system provide even greater challenges to clinicians and medical researchers because of the inherent difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) infections. In this chapter, we have attempted to provide a guide to the immediate response to a new neurological infectious disease challenge. What would be required to identify and treat affected individuals appropriately and what is required to protect the public. We have also examined the potential for the rapid development of protective vaccines, as ultimately, a vaccination program is the most effective and efficient public health strategy.
